About

John Rinehart is a Bay Area furniture maker who aspires to design and make elegant, functional, and thoughtful furniture in a sustainable way. For John, hand crafting furniture combines the joy and purpose of making something by hand along with the journey–both spiritually and physically–one takes in crafting each piece. He seeks to discover the personality and harmony in each object he makes.

Coming from a career in tech. John discovered his true passion for “living through making” while taking evening adult education woodworking classes in Palo Alto, CA. From there he continued to learn and practice the craft of furniture making, completing the full-time programs of Krenov Fine Furniture School in the College of the Redwoods and The Inside Passage school of Fine Cabinet Making.

John strives to bring each piece to life by focusing rigorously on function and size objectives, and aesthetic considerations. He is interested in the variations and colors in wood grains and works to bring out the natural beauty of the material by combining hand tools—for the intimacy they bring to the work—with machines, used for rough milling and resawing.

John lives with his family in the San Francisco bay area, where he builds furniture and teaches woodworking at the Palo Alto Adult School.
